Microsoft has two main business units - Microsoft Classic and Microsoft Dynamics. Classic looks after your infrastructure software (Windows Server, SharePoint, Exchange, SQL Server) and your desktop software (Vista, XP, Office, Internet Explorer). Dynamics focuses on business management applications (ERP, CRM, xRM).

What is ERP?
The goal of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is to drive business performance, measure effectiveness, and make better decisions that deliver immediate results to your bottom line. Reduce costs and improve customer service by connecting and streamlining your supply chain; simplify compliance and planning by making key performance metrics readily available to your organization. In short, transform your data into information and opportunity.

Microsoft Dynamics is...
an integrated ERP solution for managing your business, based on financial and accounting performance. Whether you are focused on financial health, the status of your latest production run or just a need to capture employee time effectively, Microsoft Dynamics has the suite of applications to support your business. In Microsoft’s ERP offerings, there are several products: AX for multi-national companies (+$500M annual revenue), GP (formerly Great Plains), NAV and SL for mid-market companies ($5M to $500M annual revenue). Joesoftware focuses its efforts on GP.

What is GP?
Dynamics GP is the mid-market ERP solution that provides general accounting, HR and Payroll, Job Costing, Inventory Management, Manufacturing, Service Tech Management and more. Its functionality extends to Business Intelligence reporting, automated work-flow and web integration. More on Dynamics GP.

What is CRM/xRM?
ERP is a great tool for managing your financial data but what about the rest? xRM is the "missing piece" to replace the paper files, spreadsheets, custom applications and databases that have evolved in your organization. It is a Line of Business platform - a toolset, concept or a business strategy. Each business has its own set of "I need to manage" data. xRM allows you to mimic your business processes and data in a familiar Microsoft application tailored just for you. CRM is an example of using xRM to build a line of business application for managing your sales pipeline, marketing and service activities.
