Microsoft Business Central Update Settings Reset: How to Restore Your Environment Configuration
If you’ve received a notification from Microsoft about your Business Central environment’s update settings being reset, you’re not alone. Microsoft recently experienced a service misconfiguration that accidentally wiped-out update settings across multiple environments. Here’s what happened and how to fix it.
What happened?
Microsoft sent notifications with this message:
- Issue observed: Your environment’s next update settings were reset due to a misconfiguration in Microsoft services.
- Action required: Microsoft has selected version 27.4 as the next update for your environment, scheduled for February 2026.
As a safety measure, Microsoft pushed all affected environments to update in February 2026 instead of maintaining your previously configured update schedule (such as monthly updates).
Is this urgent for you?
You have time to address this, but don’t wait too long. Your environment won’t receive any updates until February 2026 unless you take action.
Who Can Make These Changes?
Important: This process requires Business Central Global Administrator permissions. If you don’t have these permissions, you’ll need to:
- Contact your IT department or system administrator
- Identify who in your organization has Business Central Global Admin access
- Forward this information to the appropriate person
Typically, Business Central Global Admins include:
- IT administrators who manage your Microsoft 365/Dynamics 365 environment
- The person who originally set up your Business Central system
- Senior IT staff with administrative privileges
How to Fix Your Update Settings
Note: These steps must be completed by someone with Business Central Global Administrator permissions.
Step 1: Access the Business Central Admin Center
Navigate to: businesscentral.dynamics.com/[your-tenant-ID]/Admin
Step 2: Review Your Environments
You’ll see all your environments listed with “Next Update” set to version 27.4. This confirms your environment was affected by the reset.
Step 3: Select an Environment
Click on the environment name (hyperlink) that you want to update.
Step 4: Modify Update Settings
- Look for the “Update Settings” section in the middle of the Environment page
- Click the “Modify” hyperlink under “Next Update”
- You’ll see available scheduling options for future updates
Step 5: Choose Your Update Schedule
Select your preferred update timing. Keep in mind:
- Version 26.5 is planned for September 2025 but hasn’t been released yet
- You can only set intentions for updates that will become available
- Choose the schedule that matches your business needs
Step 6: Confirm Your Selection
Click the “Schedule Update” button at the bottom left to confirm your new update schedule.
Step 7: Repeat for All Environments
If you have multiple environments, repeat this process for each one.
Important Notes
- No updates are currently available beyond what’s already installed – you’re setting your intention for when future updates become available
- Each environment must be configured individually – there’s no bulk update option
- This affects all environments that were configured for regular updates before the Microsoft service issue
- Global Administrator access is required for all configuration changes
